Course Objectives The course is intended to help students develop skills within a theoretical framework for the translation of EU texts. The course will provide students with the understanding of concepts used in the European Union studies both in Turkish and English and will help students translate various types of EU texts such as regulations, directives and conclusions.
Course Content The course will include the Acquis Communautaire of the EU, its nature and characteristics. The students will be asked to do the readings for the course, give short presentations regarding the institutions of the EU and translate texts including Regulations, Directives, Decisions and Presidency Conclusions for each class as well as to discuss the translations in the classroom.
Learning Outcomes (LO) On successful completion of this course: 1. Students will coprehend the general framework, linguistic and terminological characteristics of EU texts. 2. Students will comprehend the abbreviations and expressions often used in EU texts. 3. Stıudents will gain proficiency in translating the abbreviations and expressions often used in EU texts. 4. Students will gain proficiency in the translation of academic studies and press texts which make references to the EU. 5. Students will become knowledgeable about the EU and gain proficiency in its translation. 6. Students will become familiar with the Acquis Communautaire and grasp the methods used in its translation. 7. Students will translate Regulations, Directives, Decisions and Presidency Conclusions.

3. Week The relationship between Turkey and the EU: a historical perspective
4. Week Acquis Communautaire and a brief look at each EU text.
5. Week Methods used in translation: in-class study of sample translations derived from treaties and frequently encountered templates.
6. Week Translation practice: translation of Council Decision: terminological and linguistic properties.
