Course Objectives |
After completing this course, students will:
• determine the meanings of words and phrases in context.
• understand the main idea and supporting details in written text.
• identify a writer’s purpose, point of view, and intended meaning.
• analyze the relationship among ideas in written material and draw conclusions inductively and deductively from information stated or implied in a text.
• use critical reasoning skills to evaluate written materials.
• apply translation theories to the reading texts.

Course Content |
The aim of the reading component of this course is threefold. Students will form a basic core of reading skills (skimming, scanning, making inferences, guessing vocabulary ,recognizing patterns etc.) and learn to apply these skills in an intensive reading environment. Additionally, the students will focus on some ESP vocabulary or general language use to be able to translate orally certain parts of the texts. |

Successfully completing this course results in the following learning outcomes:
1. Reading independently, using a critical thinking, problem-solving approach for a variety of purposes;
2. Selecting reading strategies appropriate to purpose and text;
3. Monitoring the effectiveness of their comprehension/rate strategies;
4. Using appropriate strategies from a resource bank when encountering new vocabulary;
5. Demonstrating various study skills and methods to meet the reading demands;
6. Translating different kinds of upper-intermediate written materials.
