Course Objectives The aim of this course is to enable prospective English language teachers to comprehend the approaches, methods and techniques in the teaching of foreign languages and the importance of these concepts in teaching English.
Course Content The meaning of learning and teaching English; the aim and basic principles of teaching English; history of teaching English; reflections of learning and teaching concepts on English language teaching; basic skills in teaching English; in-class application examples; current trends and problems in teaching English; effective ways in teaching English; a social, cultural and economic look at English language teaching.
Learning Outcomes (LO) At the end of this course students will be able to: 1) Show that the basic principles underlying the language learning and teaching methods are reflected in the approaches to learning and teaching in English, and that the techniques used for this purpose are understood in the appropriate use of the language learning and teaching process. 2) Critically evaluate the historical background of the methods and approaches in language teaching, the reasons for its emergence and its reflections on today's teaching techniques and methods. 3) Critically analyze the social, cultural and economic aspects of English language teaching and learning in the 21st century. 4) Critically evaluate the historical developments, approaches and their reflections on contemporary practices in English language teaching. 5) Specify their teaching approach and philosophy by synthesizing the current practice of teaching English in Turkey.
