Course Objectives The aim of this course is to explain the basic principles, concepts, methods and practices of mental health and psychiatric nursing for the protection, development and improvement of mental health, to evaluate the healthy/mentally impaired individual, family and society in the light of developmental, biopsychosocial changes affecting mental health, based on understanding of people and human behaviors.
Course Content The contents of this course include lectures and case discussions of preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative theoretical and applied knowledge on mental health and psychiatric nursing; knowledge and practices for the student to gain therapeutic communication skills and transfer them to the nursing process by being aware of emotions, thoughts, behaviors and interpersonal skills.
Learning Outcomes (LO) 1. He/She can define the concept of human and mental health, the dynamics affecting human mental health, and the roles of psychiatric nurses in the protection of mental health. 2. He/She knows the concepts of mental health, illness and protection; becomes aware of the importance, protection, maintenance and development of mental health in the world and in our country and the responsibilities of nurses in this field. 3. He/She can explain the normal and abnormal behavior patterns of people and the factors affecting these behaviors. 4. He/She uses therapeutic communication skills while interviewing patients with mental disorders. 5.He/She observes the individual with mental disorder and realizes the importance of writing an observation report. 6. He/She conducts “psychosocial nursing assessment” to help patients with physical illness and emotional problems and life crises. 7. He/She evaluates groups at risk in terms of mental health in the society, plans and implements nursing interventions by evaluating individuals with their families in terms of protecting, improving and rehabilitating their mental health. 8. He/She perceives the role and responsibilities of the nurse in the treatment of mental disorders. 9. He/She is aware of and applies ethical principles in psychiatric nursing.
