Course Objectives |
The aim of this course is to learn to produce, transcribe, and describe in articulatory terms many of the sounds known to occur in English in terms of phonology, to learn to produce, and to describe stress and intonation patterns in English. |
Course Content |
This course explores speech sounds and phonemes as physical entities (phonetics) and as linguistic units (phonology). In viewing sounds as physical elements, the focus is on articulatory description: How are speech sounds made? What types of movements and configurations of the vocal tract are used to produce sounds in English? Besides sounds, the course aims to teach intonation and stress patterns. |
Learning Outcomes (LO) |
By the end of this semester, the student will be able to: LO1 -identify his/her own strengths and weaknesses in vocal production and speech, while practically improving such practices. LO2 - demonstrate an understanding of the basic physiology involved in, and the major characteristics of, quality voice production. LO3 - recognize and execute the appropriate symbols involved in the broad application of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). LO4 - demonstrate an understanding of the basic stress and intonation patterns in English |
