Course Objectives The aim of this course is to examine the period and main works in English Literature from the Old English Period to the 17th Century and to reveal the similarities and differences between them and the previous ones.
Course Content Cultural history of English, American literature and English-language literature; basic terms and techniques used in text analysis; main types of text; important movements and periods, the content and style of works such as short stories, poems, plays and novels belonging to different periods; the contributions of literature to our understanding of life; critical examination and interpretation of texts and literary arts.
Learning Outcomes (LO) The students who attended the course and were successful at the end of semester will acquire the followings: 1. Defines main genres of literary works. 2. Lists and explains the characteristics of different literary genres. 3. Explains the differences between main literary genres. 4. Recalls the historical period of the particular literary genre. 5. Recognizes the elements of literature. 6. Identifies the literary terms. 7. Recognizes the literary movements. 8. Locates the particular literary genre in its historical period/context. 9. Uses the elements of literature in sample works. 10. Demonstrates the figures of speech. 11. Employs the biographical information on the sample works. 12. Demonstrates the aspects of various movements in the sample work.
