Course Objectives The course mainly aims at presenting a critical analysis of Turkish political structure in both historical and conceptual ways. Another objective of the course is to deal with events, transformations, changes and continuities taking place throughout 200 years period starting with dissolution of the Ottoman Empire till the twenty first century, in questioning manner instead of chronological and descriptive way. Furthermore during the course, discussions made on current affairs of Turkish political structure intend to provide the students with a background for both comprehending the agenda of Turkish politics and making projections for future of Turkish political structure.
Course Content The course is basically planned to provide a general outlook on main historical moments and dynamics of Turkish politics. Essential problematics of the course: continuities and ruptures in distribution of power, state-society relations and hegemony crisis taking place in modern Turkey's political and social formation. In this context, topics dealt with throughout the course: historical legacy of the Ottoman Empire, Kemalist-republican modernization, influence of army on politics, historical development of political parties and movements, ideological-political discourses such as populism, nationalism, socialism, Islamism and politico-economic as well as cultural setting of power struggles.
Learning Outcomes (LO) The students who attended the course and were successful at the end of semester will acquire the followings; 1- Getting ability to make in-depth interpretations on current political affairs 2- Building linkages between various periods through learning historical development of Turkish political structure 3- Making detailed anticipations on future of Turkish politics 4- Determining moments of state-army-civil society-society relations in the context of Turkish political life by means of studying historical and ideological roots of Republic of Turkey 5- Scrutinizing distribution of power directing Turkish politics and making critical assessment on formation and dissolution processes of hegemonies.
