Course Objectives The main objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the international humanitarian law and its enforcement.
Course Content Humanitarian law comprises the rules for restricting the violence and protecting who are not directly involved in armed conflicts. Main sources of humanitarian law are the four Geneva Conventions and the three Additional Protocols This course will examine both basic concepts of international humanitarian law and means of its enforcement.
Learning Outcomes (LO) 1. Gaining a general knowledge about the scope and potential of international humanitarian law. 2. Being aware of the potential of humanitarian law in maintaining peace and protection of rights. 3. Gaining the ability to make critical analysis of contemporary issues which require the application of humanitarian law. 4.To learn Genava Convention and its additional protocols 5. To learn historical background of humanitarian law

1. Week Definition and historical development of humanitarian law; difference between human rights law and humanitarian law.
2. Week Scope of humanitarian law. Contemporary legal basis of humanitarian law.
3. Week Relationship between jus ad bellum and jus in bello.
4. Week Conduct of hostilities: the law of armed conflict.
5. Week Statuses in armed conflicts
6. Week Protection of wounded and sick.
7. Week Law of occupation and protection of civilians.
8. Week Midterm exam
9. Week Implementation and enforcement of international humanitarian law.
10. Week Roles of the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
11. Week Accountability based on international criminal law.
12. Week The International Criminal Court and other international tribunals.
13. Week The role of the United Nations in humanitarian law.
