Course Objectives The aim of this course is to deliver to the student, a basic understanding on the historical conditions leading to the Turkish Revolution, the resistance movement led by Mustafa Kemal Pasha against the occupation of Anatolia and the military, political and diplomatic dimensions of the movement.
Course Content History of the Turkish Revolution and the Principles of Ataturk-I, reviews the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the particulars on the success of the Turkish National Struggle.
Learning Outcomes (LO) The student, successfully attending this course will; 1. Learn the concepts of Reform, Revolution and Development. 2. Comprehend the internal and external reasons for the decline of the Ottoman State and evaluates these vis-a-vis the developments in the West. 3. Learn about the reasons and outcomes of the reforms intended to rescue the Ottoman State. 4. Learn about the movements of thoughts in the final period of the Ottoman Empire and is able to make comparisons between those movements. 5. Learn about the reasons and outcomes of the 1877-78 Ottoman-Russian War, the War of Tripoli, the Balkan Wars and World War I, which in extend lead to severe territorial losses for the Ottoman Empire. 6. Learn about the severe provisions in the Armistice of Mudros and comprehend how the Victors of World War I shaped the World with the Paris Peace Conference. 7. Learn about Mustafa Kemal Pasha's position in World War I, opposition towards the Armistice of Mudros and his preparations in Istanbul before departing to Samsun. 8. Learn about the reasons for Mustafa Kemal Pasha's assignment to Anatolia and comprehend the process of organizing the Struggle for Independence from Samsun till Ankara. 9. Evaluate the reasons why the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli) still preserves its importance till this day. 10. Conceive the meaning of the opening of TGNA in respect to democracy as well as proclamation of a new state. 11. Compare the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli) with the Treaty of Sèvres and conceive the different positions of the Palace, the Istanbul Government and TGNA vis-a-vis the Treaty of Sèvres. 12. Comprehend the importance of Mustafa Kemal Pasha as a leader while the opening of TGNA and the Struggle for Independence. 13. Comprehend the meaning and value of total freedom by comparing the Armistice of Mudania with the Lausanne Peace Treaty and the Armistice of Mudros with the Treaty of Sèvres.
