Psychological Counseling and Guidance


General Information

MS Psychological Counseling and Guidance program was founded in 2002. The language of instruction is Turkish and it a with thesis program. Ther academic staff consists of 2 professors, 6 assistant professors, 1 educational planner and a research assistant.

Qualification Awarded

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Master of Science in Psychological Counseling and Guidance.

Admission Requirements

Students who wants to apply Psychological Counselng and Guidance Master Program, should graduated from departments of

  • Psychology,
  • Preschool Education,
  • Special Education
  • Eduacational Sciences
  • Social Services (with only pedagogical formation)

Canditates for Master's degree program are admitted by interviews. Number of students to be admitted to graduate programs and the qualifications of prospective students, will be announced before the beginning of each year. The applicants who hold a Bachelor's Degree and willing to enroll in the Master's programme may apply to the Directorate of the Graduate School with the documents: 1-Sufficient score (at least 55 out of 100) from the Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) conducted by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) or GRE Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score equivalent to ALES score of 55. 2-English proficiency (at least 50 out of 100 from the Profiency Exam conducted by Ufuk University Foreign Language Department, or at least 50 out of 100 from ÜDS (University Language Examination conducted by OSYM) or TOEFL or IELTS score equivalent to UDS score of 50. The candidates fulfilling the criteria outlined above are invited to interview. The assessment for admission to masters programs is based on: 50% of ALES, 25% of academic success in the undergraduate programme (cumulative grade point average (CGPA) ) and 25% of interview grade. The required minimum interview grade is 50 out of 100. The candidates having an assessed score of 60 at least are accepted into the Master's programme. The results of the evaluation are announced by the Directorate of Graduate School. 

Arrangements for the Recognition of Prior Learning

The rules for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. A student who is currently enrolled in a Master's Degree programme in the same discipline at another institution and has successfully completed at least one semester, upon submitting all required documents before the deadline, may transfer to the Master's Programme at UFUK University upon the recommendation of the department administration and with the approval of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School. The decision taken will also include eligibility for exemption from some course requirements of the graduate program.

Profile of the Programme

Psychological Counseling and Guidance MSc Program aims to train professionals with a good command of Psychological Counseling knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional ethics of counseling and keep them up-to-date and with sufficient knowledge of statistical and research methods.

  4. be able to aware of fundamental theories in Guidance and Psychological Counseling.

  5. knows individual's developmental stages and be able to determine his/her readiness level.

  6. knows psychological tests used in individual guidance.

  7. knows principles and techniques in group counseling.

  8. benefits from other psychological counseling theories while carrying out individual and group seances.

  9. knows vocational guidance theories.

  10. knows psychological tests used in vocational guidance.

  11. be able to familiar with environmental factors effecting normal and abnormal behavior, psychopathology, disabilities and crisis in developmental stages.

  12. internalizes multi-cultural approach.

  13. be aware of the meaning and importance of coordination, consultation and supervision and be able to practice all these.

  14. be able to choose the appropriate statistical techniques among qualitative and quantitative methods and be able to practice this techniques on both inscription and computer.

  15. be able to carry out all steps like revelation, gaining insight, practise and termination.

  16. be able to discern different point of views in other theories and also be able to comment on them.

  17. be able to determine individual's needs appropriate to developmental stages and consult in accordance with these stages.

  18. be able to organize and carry out group counseling taking account of the needs of group.

  19. be able to organize and carry out vocational guidance.

  20. be able to organize guidance by internalizing multi-cultural approach.

  21. be able to predict and try to solve possible problems which an individual may experience in the society.

  22. knows how to utilize the internet and technology in order to reach the kowledge, share it, support the professional development and data analysis.

  23. be able to carry out researches contributing Guidance and Psychological Counseling.

  24. conforms to the ethics, rules and law while practicing his/ her job.

  25. follows all developments on Guidance and Psychological Counseling and be aware of postmodern theories.

  26. be able to help the individual evaluate both himself/ herself and people around him/ her in a wholesome way.

  27. be able to use the languages Turkish and English in an effective and fluent way.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students are required to take a mid-term and final examination for course evaluation. The final grade is based on the mid-term examination grade and the final examination grade with the contribution of 40% and 60% respectively. To pass any course, a student must receive at least 60 out of 100. Students whose Cum GPA are at least 2.50 are considered successful. Students whose Cum GPA lower than 2.5 (CB) must retake the courses that they had CC grades.The assessment for each course is described in detail in "Individual Course Description".
