International Relations (Non-thesis)


General Information

MS in International Relations program founded in the 2005-2006 academic year and consist of courses involving regional politics, international law, Turkish foreign policy and political theory topics. Students may complete the program with or without writing a thesis. The language of instruction is Turkish. The academic staff consists of 3 Professors and 3 Assistant Professors.

Qualification Awarded

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded the degree of Master of Science in International Relations.

Admission Requirements

Students who wants to apply International Relations Master Program, should graduated from related departments such as Political Science and International Relations, International Relations, Political Science and Public Administration. Candidates for Master's degree program are admitted by interviews. Number of students to be admitted to graduate programs and the qualifications of prospective students, will be announced before the beginning of each year. The applicants who hold a Bachelor's Degree and willing to enroll in the Master's programme may apply to the Directorate of the Graduate School with the documents: 1-Sufficient score (at least 55 out of 100) from the Academic Staff and Graduate Study Education Exam (ALES) conducted by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) or GRE Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score equivalent to ALES score of 55. 2-English proficiency (at least 50 out of 100 from the Proficiency Exam conducted by Ufuk University Foreign Language Department, or at least 50 out of 100 from ÜDS (University Language Examination conducted by OSYM) or TOEFL or IELTS score equivalent to UDS score of 50. The candidates fulfilling the criteria outlined above are invited to interview. The assessment for admission to masters programs is based on: 50% of ALES, 25% of academic success in the undergraduate programme (cumulative grade point average (CGPA) ) and 25% of interview grade. The required minimum interview grade is 50 out of 100. The candidates having an assessed score of 60 at least are accepted into the Master's programme. The results of the evaluation are announced by the Directorate of Graduate School. 

Arrangements for the Recognition of Prior Learning

The rules for recognition of formal prior learning are well defined. A student who is currently enrolled in a Master's Degree programme in the same discipline at another institution and has successfully completed at least one semester, upon submitting all required documents before the deadline, may transfer to the Master's Programme at UFUK University upon the recommendation of the department administration and with the approval of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School. The decision taken will also include eligibility for exemption from some course requirements of the graduate program. 

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The programme consists of both thesis and without thesis programmes. Thesis programme a minimum of eight courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, one seminar course, and thesis, with a minimum of 24 local credits. In without thesis programme, students should take minimum of 30 local credits and one “semester project”. The seminar course, thesis and semester project are non-credit and graded on a pass/fail basis. A student is required to successfully complete the designated list of courses and meet the requirement of a minimum of 120 ECTS credits in thesis programme and 90 ECTS credits in without thesis programme. The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.50/4.00 and no falling grades. In thesis programme, students must register for thesis work and the Specialization Field course offered by his supervisor every semester following the semester, in which the supervisor is appointed. A student who has completed work on the thesis within the time period, must write a thesis, using the data collected, according to the specifications of the Graduate School Thesis Writing Guide. The thesis must be defended in front of a jury. The jury is composed of the thesis supervisor and at least 3 faculty members. Of the appointed jury members, up to two may be selected from another Department or another University. In case the jury consists of 3 members. A majority vote by the jury members determines the outcome of the thesis or examination. The vote can be for "acceptance", "rejection" or "correction". The Department Chairperson will inform the Director of the Graduate School, in writing, of the jury's decision within 3 days. 

Profile of the Programme

Political Science and International Relations offer synthesis of analyses by bringing together various disciplines. The students of Political Science and International Relations Bachelor Programme in our University, benefit from the interdisciplinary education that is a combination of different areas such as Sociology, Psychology, Statistics, Law, Economics, History and Philosophy. The principle goal of this programme is to provide our students with the ability to think analytically and critically as well as comprehending and interpreting the political, social, economic, cultural phenomena and dynamics. Furthermore, in accordance with the Political Science and International Relations Bachelor Programme, our department offers a comprehensive education, enabling our students to obtain a broad perspective on Social Sciences. In this regard, our department is committed to raising individuals with self-awareness and ability to explain the current affairs.

Graduates who successfully completed the Master's Degree may apply to doctorate (third cycle) programmes in the same or in related disciplines.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Students are required to take a mid-term and final examination for course evaluation. The final grade is based on the mid-term examination grade and the final examination grade with the contribution of 40% and 60% respectively. To pass any course, a student must receive at least 60 out of 100. Students whose Cum GPA are at least 2.50 are considered successful. Students whose Cum GPA lower than 2.50 (CB) must retake the courses that they had CC grades.The assessment for each course is described in detail in "Individual Course Description".
