Course Objectives The main objective of the course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the rights of the child in international human rights law, mainly based on UN Convention on the Right of the Child (UNCRC)
Course Content The course aims at studying the “rights of the child” in international human rights law by taking the UNCRC as main legal source. Legal background of child rights law and other relevant international documents, the four general principles of UNCRC, specific rights of the child mentioned in the Convention, Optional Protocols, the Committee on the Rights of the Child and communications procedure will be studied. Adoption of views of the Committee on specific cases and some child rights related case law of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will be assessed following the theoretical information.
Learning Outcomes (LO) 1. Gaining a general knowledge on the concept of “the rights of child” 2. Being aware of the general principles of the UNCRC and the child centered approach of the Convention 3. Learning the specific rights of the child set forth in the Convention 4. Being aware of the importance of the rights of the child within the holistic and interrelated nature of human rights 5. Gaining a general knowledge of international case law of UN CRC and relevant case law of ECtHR
