Course Objectives This course is designed to increase the students' awareness in the basic concepts, procedures and practices related to the assessment of language achievement and proficiency. It also aims to enable students to design, implement and evaluate a variety of testing instruments for a specific group of language learners.
Course Content Teaching and testing Testing as a problem solving Kinds of test and testing Test tasks, choosing and devising test tasks Stages of test construction Testing grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and oral ability Theoretical and practical considerations in the constructions, use and critical evaluation of both classroom and standardized tests of language proficiency Basic concepts of validity and reliability, as well as a variety of different kinds of tests and testing techniques.
Learning Outcomes (LO) The students who attended the course and were successful at the end of semester will acquire the followings; LO1 - Students will analyze and differentiate between test types, such as achievement, proficiency and placement. LO2 - Students will be able to compare and contrast different types of testing methods. LO3 - Students will define testing methods and identify techniques. LO4 - Students will be able to evaluate advantages and disadvantages of test techniques. LO5 - Students will be able to design a language achievement test. LO6 - Students will be able to implement tests. LO7 - Students will be able to report the interpretation of test results (both written and oral).
