Course Objectives The aim of the course is to make the students aware of the difference of the traditional and modern language studies, concepts, the structural dimension of the language (phonology, morphology, syntax). In this way, they will know the relationship of this information with foreign language teaching
Course Content The analysis of the root of the language, the difference of human language and the other communication systems, basic concepts of phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax, the dimension of the language and meaning, the relationship of the structure of linguistics and language teaching
Learning Outcomes (LO) The students who attended the course and were successful at the end of semester will acquire the followings; LO1 – to gain a scientific and holistic perspective on language when developing knowledge and behavior LO2 - to evaluate the studies of the structural dimension of language teaching based on the various levels of language and to use these effectively

1. Week Traditional and modern language studies; basic features of modern linguistics
2. Week The origins of language; the natural sound source and other hypotheses; study questions
3. Week Human language and animal communication; displacement, arbitrariness, productivity, cultural transmission, duality…
4. Week The development of writing: pictograms, ideograms, logograms, syllabic and alphabetic writing
5. Week The sounds of language: phonetics; place of articulation, manner of articulation and voicing. Diphtongs; vowel and consonant charts;IPA
6. Week The sound patterns of language: phonology; phonemes , phones and allophones; minimal pairs; phonetics and phonology in ELT
7. Week Words and word formation processes; etymology; prefixes, suffixes, infixes;research tasks
8. Week Review of the basic issues and discussion; study questions
9. Week Morphology: morphemes and allomorphs, free and bound morphemes;problems in morphological description
10. Week Phrases and sentence grammar: traditional grammar; prescriptive and descriptive approaches in grammar ; IC analysis
11. Week Syntax: generative grammar; deep and surface structure; structural ambiguity
12. Week Semantics; types of meaning; semantic roles, agent and theme, instrument and experiencer, location, source and goal.
13. Week Lexical relations: synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy,polysemy;;collocations Syntax and semantics in language teaching.
14. Week Review: discussion of the basic issues and relationships
