Course Objectives |
This course focuses on teaching English as a foreign language to young learners (TEYL), both theoretically and practically. The course aims to examine the background and development of teaching English to young students (MAs); Examines cognitive and affective features of LLs; examining how children learn languages; To review language analysis approaches for teaching English to MAs; Examine classroom management strategies, methodology, resources and materials used to teach MAs; To review the assessment and evaluation methods used with graduates, to be able to teach foreign language (English) courses, which have started to be given in primary education, in line with field-specific method knowledge, skills and awareness when necessary; In this direction, it aims to contribute to the training of more advanced teacher candidates in the fields of education |
Course Content |
The global position of English as a foreign language and the English teaching requirements arising from this position; The main aims and principles of English teaching at primary education level, shaped in line with these needs; and basic elements of theory and practice in teaching English as a foreign language to children will form the content of this course. Weekly lectures will be structured on topics from this content. Introduction: Background of MSc teaching; How children learn; Learning theory related to the teaching of MAs; Cognitive and affective features of LLs; Priorities and implications for teaching MAs; Designing materials and activities for teaching MAs; Language presentation and practice with MAs: Teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing; The role of entertainment, games, stories, songs, nursery rhymes and drama; Bug fix for MAs; Issues and approaches to the evaluation of MAs; Classroom Management |

Examining different foreign language learning environments of children, obtaining information on the creation of activities that will support children's foreign language learning processes, and preparing materials and activities for in-class use by using this information. |
