Dersin Amacı Students are provided with sufficient background on the concept of ‘genre’, along with analysing certain literary genres. Being familiar with figurative language elements and literary discourse, they will be able to approach literary texts from a critical standpoint, with their knowledge of Literary Theory and Criticism. As language cannot be considered independent from specific linguistic properties but also from cultural aspects of language, reading literature will enhance their cultural knowledge along with linguistic knowledge, which will also help the students who want to translate literary texts from English into their own language.
Dersin İçeriği This course includes the discussion on the concept of genre, with analysis of certain genres, ranging from short story to tragedy as a dramatic form; from poetry to novel, to familiarise students with literary discourse, to enable them to understand cultural and implicit meanings and to analyse texts from different literary genres by employing certain literary theories.
Dersin Öğrenme Çıktıları (ÖÇ) The students can appreciate certain literary works, with an understanding of the concept ‘genre’, and can employ certain approaches to different texts from different genres, with their enhanced knowledge about literary criticism and theory.

1. Hafta What is Literature? Why do we study literature? What is the relation between language, culture and literature? What makes literary discourse different from scientific discourse? What is literary genre?
2. Hafta What is short story? What are the elements of short story? Analysis of Like A Winding Sheet.
3. Hafta What is figurative language? Analysing the language properties in Like a Winding Sheet. Discussion on racism and gender (with specific touch on post-colonial and post-feminist criticism).
4. Hafta What is drama? What are the sub-forms of drama? What is tragedy? What makes a play tragedy (with reference to Aristotle’s Poetics on tragedy).

13. Hafta What is novel? (with references to Bakhtin) What makes novel different from short story? Methods on how to analyse a novel.
14. Hafta Discussing on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (Students are expected to read the novel before coming to the class)
